Flame Spreading Above Liquid Fuels: Surface-Tension-Driven Flows

A surface-tension-driven liquid flow, induced by the temperature profile ahead of a spreading flame, is analyzed. Velocities, pressures and surface heights are determined for a two-dimensional flame spreading at a steady rate. It is demonstrated that convection can occur near the suface ahead of the flame and in the direction of propagation and, thus, that liquid-phase convective heat transfer can be a plausible rate-controlling mechanism for flame propagation.

This article is a review of modeling and experiments of the ignition and flame spread over liquid fuel pools for separate regimes defined by the initial pool temperature relative to the fuel flash point. It emphasises experimental and numerical studies covers the additional subjects of ignition susceptibility, analytic and numerical modeling, non-air atmospheres and forced flow, beds of fuel-soaked sand or glass beads and buoyancy-related processes applicable to microgravity combustion science and spacecraft fire safety.

Mechanism of Flame Propagation above the Surface of a Flammable Liquid

This article examines a flame that propagates along the surface of a liquid due to heating by combustion products. The velocities of an oxidizer moving towards the flame,
which propagates at velocities comparable to the laminar burning rate of premixed hydrocarbon flames, are measured. There is a correlation established between the flash point of a flammable liquid and the flame propagation velocity.
